June E-Postal Match

It’s time to “shoot some pool!” Phil over at the RNS blog is our gracious host for this month’s E-Postal match, and has posted the target and rules on his blog. In the real life version of pool, you shoot your even or odd numbered balls one after the other, until you miss. Phil’s game is much the same. Choose even or odd, and shoot as many of the balls as you can (even across multiple targets if necessary) until you miss.

Phil has the rest of the details below.

It has been a while since I’ve gotten together with Mr. Completely to put one of these on, but I was able to just barely slide into the hosting slot for the June E-Postal match.

So here is your chance for fame and glory and possibly a $50 gift certificate to Cheaper than Dirt!

Evens or Odds

20001.jpg

You can go to Targetz.Com to download Target 20001. Print out a few and then head out to “shoot some pool”, so to speak.

Click here to download the target (*.PDF)

The rules are: You can pick either the even numbered or odd numbered balls, but once you choose, those are the only ones you may shoot. One shot per ball on as many targets as you can consecutively hit until missing. You may change from evens to odds or vice-versa if that is what you hit when you start your new target, but you must stay with that for the rest of the target.

The winners will be declared by counting the most balls hit. Ties will be broken by counting the most hits within the ring containing the number.

Classes are as follows:

CLASS ONE: Any rimfire handgun with no more than a 12″ barrel, iron sights.

CLASS TWO: Any rimfire handgun with no more than a 12″ barrel, optic sights, no magnification.

CLASS THREE: Any centerfire (non-revolver) handgun with no more than a 12″ barrel, iron sights.

CLASS FOUR: Any centerfire (non-revolver) handgun with no more than a 12″ barrel, optic sights, no magnification.

CLASS FIVE: Any revolver with no more than a 12″ barrel, iron sights.

CLASS SIX: Any revolver with no more than a 12″ barrel, optic sights, no magnification.

CLASS SEVEN: Any handgun with no more than a 14″ barrel, any sights, scopes, laser, whatever. This class is primarily for target pistols.

DISTANCE: 25 feet, or Ten yards, which ever is available at your range.

SHOOTING POSITION: Standing, un-supported, off-hand, one or two hands on gun permitted.

As Mr. C says “If you have something interesting to shoot that doesn’t quite fit in the above classes, go ahead and enter anyway.”

Though there is not an actual official “rifle/carbine” class, I’d like to mention here that I shoot this target at 25 yards with my 10-22 with a holo-sight and my Marlin bolt action 22 with it’s factory irons with my elbow resting on the bench. I have also shot this target at both 100 and 200 yards with both my .22-250 and my 308 from a bench rest.

If you’ve “got the balls” to try it, I will quite happily post the results. Plus, it’ll get you an extra entry for that $50 Cheaper Than Dirt gift certificate.

We’re working on the honor system here. That is why there is fame and glory involved.

Please have your scores to my email box by Saturday, July 3rd and I’ll have scores up on Monday, July 5th (randomnuclearstrikes (at) gmail (dot) com). Any questions can be sent to that email addy as well.

Good luck!

Print out a stack of targets, grab your pistols and a couple of boxes of ammunition and head out to your local range to see how well you stack up against other shooters!

May E-Postal Match Deadline Approaching!

It’s almost the deadline for getting your entries in for the May E-Postal match hosted by Danno over at Sandcastle Scrolls. You’ve got a long Memorial Day weekend ahead of you to head out and shoot your target, so what’s holding you back? Each entry gives you a chance to win a $50 gift certificate from Cheaper Than Dirt!

Download Danno’s Dart Board Target, pack up your pistols or rifles, head out to the range and shoot your entry. When you’re done, scan or take a picture of your target and send it along with your name, blog or website URL, class, score, gun details (Make & Model, caliber, barrel length, sight system), and range shot at to sandcastlescrolls at msn dot com no later than 11:59 PM on Monday May 31st.

May E-Postal Match

Danno over at SandCastle Scrolls is the host for the May E-Postal match. His dart style target may look simple, but don't be fooled. Those little triple point value sections are devilishly hard to hit!

I'll let Danno take over describing the course of fire from here:
This month we are "Throwin' Darts".

The target is courtesy of Targetz.Com: 20041 or 20042

Click HERE To Download the Target (*.PDF)

Scoring:
I suspect most are familiar with dartboard scoring. But for the sake of completeness and avoid arguments over the value of the bullseye, the score is the value of the slice hit. The outer ring is the double ring, and the inner ring is triple ring. The center is the bullseye. Outer bull scores 25 and the inner bull is double (50).

Just to complicate things make things interesting, the "loop rule" is in effect. An actual dart board uses a wire mesh to divert the dart tip one side or the other so there are no "liners". These form many loops and only one hit per loop counts.. Any given number has four loops: an inner pieslice, a triple score, an outer slice and a double score. The second hit within a loop does not score, but a hit on the same number but within a different loop does score.

Our paper targets do not include any such mesh. Instead the shot scores the higher score. In the case of two "liners" such as depicted here, one scores high, one scores low. This would score 80 (20 + 60). With multiple liners on a given loop, this could get complicated. In general the scoring will be interpreted to give the shooter the highest possible score, but a loop only scores once. Once it's scored, a second liner takes the next highest score.

You have 9 shots per target. A perfect score would be:
Triple 20 = 60
Triple 19 = 57
Triple 18 = 54
Triple 17 = 51
Double bull = 50
Triple 16 = 48
Triple 15 = 45
Triple 14 = 42
Double 20 = 40
Total = 347

Shooting details:9 shots, Standing unsupported, one or two hands. No time limit.
Range:
Rimfire Rifles: 25 yards (Print target 100% size)
Centerfire Rifle: 50 yards (Print target 100% size).
Pistols 7 yards or range minimum. For longer distances, target should be printed under/oversize to compensate for the additional distance as follows:

7 yards = 21 feet = 84% *
25 feet = 100%
10 yards = 30 feet = 120%
11 yards = 33 feet = 132% (this should just fit on an 11x17!)
These ratios preserve the same sight picture for the increased range.

Enter as many times as you like but only entry one per shooter per gun. More entries mean more chances to win Cheaper-Than-Dirt's $50 give away.

Classes:
0: Airgun pistol (.177 CO2 or compressed air)
1: Rimfire pistol, iron sights
2: Rimfire pistol, optic sights
3: Centerfire pistol, iron sights
4: Centerfire pistol, optic sights
5: Rimfire rifle, iron sights (25 yards)
6: Rimfire rifle, optic sights (25 yards)
7: Centerfire rifle, iron sights (50 yds)
8: Centerfire rifle, optic sights (50 yards)
9: other? Shoot it and let me know.

Send Name, blog or website URL, a scan or photo of target, class, score, gun details (Make & Model, caliber, barrel length, sight system), range to sandcastlescrolls at msn dot com

PS MauserGirl in NY
... this is for you. I took your comment to JimmyB last month to imply you only have rifles. You ask and we respond! We have rifle classes this month! I EXPECTat least one entry from you! Show us what you can do with that Mauser! ;-)

* Range Correction calculation:
I started out calculating the ratio of the full target diameter to the distance (both in inches). Turns out the target diameter doesn't matter, a simple ratio of the distances is sufficient.

Correction percentage = range (in feet) / 25 * 100

This looks like a fun and challenging target! Make sure to download yours today, print it out and head out to the range to shoot your entry to the match. Remember, each entry you submit (limit one per person per firearm) earns you one chance to win a $50 Gift Certificate from Cheaper Than Dirt!

April E-Postal Match

The April e-Postal match as hosted by The Conservative UAW Guy has begun.

April's Mr. Completely e-Postal Contest starts here!
I shot this target a few years back and found it to be fun and challenging at the same time, so it is making a return. There will be 2 targets shot per entry, one shot standing, one shot sitting.

Here is the low-down:
Download the target for the contest here: Lots 'o' Circles Target
Target courtesy of The Glock FAQ. (The target is in standard PDF format, so you'll need Adobe Readeror something equivalent to view/print it.)

Details:
(Firearm classifications courtesy of Mr. C):

CLASS ONE: Any rimfire handgun with no more than a 12" barrel, iron sights.

CLASS TWO: Any rimfire handgun with no more than a 12" barrel, optic sights, no magnification.

CLASS THREE: Any centerfire (non-revolver) handgun with no more than a 12" barrel, iron sights.

CLASS FOUR: Any centerfire (non-revolver) handgun with no more than a 12" barrel, optic sights, no magnification.

CLASS FIVE: Any centerfire revolver with no more than a 12" barrel, iron sights.

CLASS SIX: Any centerfire revolver with no more than a 12" barrel, optic sights, no magnification.

CLASS SEVEN:
Any handgun with no more than a 14" barrel, any sights, scopes, laser, whatever. This class is primarily for target pistols.

If you have something interesting to shoot that doesn't quite fit in the above classes, go ahead and enter anyway.

DISTANCE
: 25 feet, or Ten yards, whichever is available at your range.

TARGET 1 Shooting Position: STANDING, unsupported, off-hand, one or two hands on gun permitted.

TARGET 2 Shooting Position: SEATED, off of bench/table/bag/aardvark. No machine rests, however. Leaning against a lane wall is permissible too, if you have no chairs or benches.

PROCEDURE/SCORING: You will shoot two targets (per entry). There are 13 circles on the paper, numbered from 1 for the largest circle, to 13 for the smallest. These (understandably) are the point values attributed to each respective circle.

In each entry, you are allowed thirteen (13) shots at each of two targets, for a total of 26 shots per entry.

Each circle can only be counted ONCE. Multiple hits on a circle will only count as one hit, and under no circumstances are more than 13 shots allowed on any target. Touching the black of the circle/breaking the edge line counts as a hit.

Each target has a perfect score of 91 (1 +2 ...+13 = 91) for a possible total score of 182 (per entry).

Note: On some of the larger circles, it is possible to hit more than one circle with one round. So, if a round hits two circles, the higher scoring circle, and ONLY higher scoring circle, will be scored.

MULTIPLE ENTRIES: You can enter as many sets of targets as you wish. Bring the whole armory! Just remember, only one entry per gun. Different calibers in the same gun count as one gun. (Like shooting 38's and .357's in your Smith and Wesson 686, for example.)

SUBMITTING YOUR ENTRY: Scan or take a digital photo of your targets. The targets should have the score, shooting postion (1 - standing, 2 - sitting), your moniker, distance, and firearm type written on them.

Entries are due by 11:59PM (EST) Sunday, May 1, 2010 (to give you the weekend to shoot it). Email the images - cugblog AT msn DOT com - accompanied by the following:

1. Your score for each target page and the total score of both pages.

2. The name you want used when the results are posted; also include a link to your website and/or targets for some hot linky-love action.

3. Gun description: Brand, model, semi-auto or revolver, caliber, barrel length, and type of sights, any other cool info.

4. Class: As listed above.

5. Anything interesting or unique about your entry or shooting session that other shooters might enjoy hearing about.

STRATEGY: Strategery to consider for maximum scorage: Is it worth taking 3 shots at the 13 or the 12, forgoing the 6 points possible with the 1, 2 and 3? What about skipping the 4, too? Would it be easier to just start at 1 circle and work your way across the ascending numbers?
Decisions, decisions...

PRIZES: Accolades, bragging rights, and the awe and respect of your peers, as well as my deep, heartfelt personal admiration.

New and Improved contest!! Now with Retsyn!!! = Don't forget, one lucky random contestant will receive a $50 gift certificate from Cheaper Than Dirt!! Now that rocks!!!

Good luck in the drawing and in your shooting. :)

Have fun, be safe, throw some lead.

E-Postal Match "Seein' Stars" Results

Mr. Completely has posted the results for the first e-postal match of the year. Congratulations goes out to Ol' Rich for his spectacular shooting!

The results are in, and we had 41 entries, a record number, which is particularly cool since it's only the first e-Postal match of the year, and the first one each year always seems to have a smaller number of entries.

We received four entries from the North Dakota State University Shooting club, and we we all want to warmly welcome them to our e-Postal match series. Although their scores look low, it turned out that they had to shoot their targets at fifty feet, rather than the twenty five feet or ten yards minimum set by the rules, so their scores would probably be doubled from the closer distance.

We also had a new shooter by the name of Ol' Rich, and he shot some excellent scores. Next month he will be required to shoot the match in total darkness with his back to the target and a milk bucket over his head! Just kidding!! Excellent shooting, Rich.

Phil from the Random Nuclear Strikes blog took several of his co-workers out to the range and let them all shoot some entries. How about YOUR co-workers? Why not take a group out to the range for next month's match?

There is also a random drawing for a $50 Cheaper Than Dirt gift certificate for everyone who entered this month's e-Postal match. I will delay the drawing for a couple of days just in case someone's entry never arrived or I screwed up and didn't get you into the results. If you sent in an entry and you are not in the above results, email me ASAP and we'll get it sorted out before the drawing, which will be on Monday.

2010 E-Postal Match Season Has Begun

Mr. Completely, host of the 2010 E-Postal Season is also our host for the first match of the year, Seein' Stars.
It's time for the monthly e-Postal matches to get underway, and we're starting out the series with a version of a match from a few years ago but with some slightly different rules. The name of the new match is "Seein' Stars", and I'm sure some of us will be "Seein' Stars" long after shooting the match! This match is a real challenge as it's relatively easy to do fairly well, but nearly impossible to max the score.

This month we have seven classes, so there's a place for just about everything. It's time to drag out all those handguns that have been unused all Winter and limber 'em up!

TARGET: The same target is used in all classes. The target can be downloaded from here:
Seein' Stars Target
It is an Adobe Acrobat PDF file. When you print it out, the biggest star should measure 4" inches across. If you print it out and end up with something different, try un-checking "fit to page" in the print settings.

CLASS FIVE: Any revolver with no more than a 12" barrel, iron sights.

CLASS SIX: Any revolver with no more than a 12" barrel, optic sights, no magnification.

CLASS SEVEN: Any handgun with no more than a 14" barrel, any sights, scopes, laser, whatever. This class is primarily for target pistols.

If you have something interesting to shoot that doesn't quite fit in the above classes, go ahead and enter anyway.

DISTANCE : 25 feet, or Ten yards, which ever is available at your range.

SHOOTING POSITION: Standing, un-supported, off-hand, one or two hands on gun permitted.

SCORING: In each class you are allowed ten shots at the target. Each star can only be counted once, no matter how many times you shoot it. Touching the black counts as a hit. The target has a perfect score of 320.

Ties will be decided based on the highest number of hits solidly in the black and not touching the edges.

Mark your score on each target with a legible pen, along with the class and type of gun used. Don't write your name on the target, only the name you want to appear in the results, as your target may get posted on Mr. Completely.

STRATEGY: Are you better off to risk trying for the fifty point star, and risk missing it, or should you play it safe and be sure to get the easier ones of lower value?

MULTIPLE ENTRIES: You can enter more than once, in fact, it is encouraged. Shoot everything you own, and everything you can borrow! Take a buddy to the range, get him entered, then borrow his gun and enter that! The only restriction is that you can only enter once for any given gun, in any individual Class. You can shoot the target as many times as you like, and send in the best one.

Different calibers in the same gun count as one gun. For example, .38SPL and .357MAG are considered as one, as would be .44SPL and .44MAG. Different guns of the same caliber and barrel length can be entered.

PRIZES: Nope, it's just for the fun of it and the bragging rights! HOWEVER, there WILL be a random drawing of all the entries to win a $50 Gift Certificate from Cheaper Than Dirt. (Very cool....)

SUBMITTING YOUR ENTRY: Take a digital photo of, (or scan) your targets, and email the picture, along with:

1. Your score.

2. The name you want used when we post the results.

3. Gun description - Brand, model, semi-auto, revolver, black powder, caliber, barrel length, and type of sights

4. Class: Class One, Two, Three, four, five, six, or seven.

5. Anything interesting or unique about your entry that other shooters might enjoy hearing about.

Email it all to b l o g (at) w h i d b e y (dot) c o m

If you can't scan or send target pictures, send everything else to me in an email, and we'll arrange for either fax or snail mail for the targets.

The rules are subject to revision as needed, should the need arise.

All entries must be received by Midnight on Monday, March 29th, and results will be posted within seven days, or less.

If you have any questions, leave the question in the comments to this post, or send me an email, or both.

Have fun!!
